Should I Start With a Small Tattoo Before Getting a Large Piece?

SAnswered by Sude ErdemTattoo artist in Los Angeles

No. If you actually want a large tattoo, you do not need to start with a small one. A small tattoo will not accurately prepare you for a long session, because tattoo pain usually becomes much more intense after several hours. A line done in the first few minutes can feel very different from the same line after six hours.

If you genuinely want a small tattoo, that is completely fine. But if your goal is a sleeve or another large-scale piece, getting a small tattoo only to “test” the experience can create problems for the future composition and may eventually become something that needs to be worked around or covered.

Large projects can also be divided into multiple sessions if a full-day appointment becomes too difficult. A full-day session for a first tattoo is completely normal, but that does not mean it will be painless—especially toward the later hours.
