It depends on the design, but I usually keep the area directly over the elbow much simpler. Because the joint is constantly seen at different angles and positions, very detailed elements can look distorted most of the time and only appear clean from certain angles.

For the best aesthetic result, I usually place the more detailed parts on flatter areas where they can be tattooed and viewed more clearly.
