Do I Need Laser Removal Before Getting a Cover-Up?

Answered by Sude ErdemTattoo artist in Los Angeles

Not always. I usually avoid recommending laser unless it’s really necessary because it can change the skin texture and make the area more difficult to tattoo. In some cases, laser can also leave additional scarring.

If the available cover-up options can still give you a result you’ll be happy with, I prefer going directly into the cover-up. However, if you want a very light design, such as a portrait, the existing tattoo may be too dark for that approach. In those cases, laser lightening may be necessary first.
