Stronger numbing creams can change the structure of the skin, which makes the area more difficult to tattoo. They can also cause the tattoo to heal much lighter than expected, which can significantly reduce the final quality of the tattoo.

If you are worried about pain, there are things that can make a much bigger difference than numbing cream: come to your appointment after eating a proper meal, get a good night’s sleep the day before, and if you drink alcohol, stop drinking 3–4 days before your session.
