Yes. Your references do not have to be tattoo images. Photos, paintings, movie stills, illustrations, sculptures, fashion images, or anything else that shows the mood, subject, lighting, texture, or composition you like can be useful.

Sometimes non-tattoo references are actually better because they give me more freedom to create something original instead of making the design look too similar to an existing tattoo.
