I recommend coming to the appointment without self-tanner on the area we will tattoo. It can change the surface color of the skin and make it harder to evaluate your natural skin tone while designing and working.

If you use self-tanner regularly, let it fade completely from the tattoo area before your appointment rather than trying to remove it aggressively right before the session.
