Does a Cover-Up Tattoo Have to Be Bigger Than the Original?

Answered by Sude ErdemTattoo artist in Los Angeles

Not always. A cover-up does not necessarily have to be much bigger than the original tattoo.

However, I usually use the surrounding empty skin to place the strongest and most visually attractive parts of the new design. This helps the final tattoo look like an intentional piece rather than an obvious cover-up.
